Kominos Wines grows, makes and bottles

Stanthorpe wine

on the high altitude Granite Belt (near Stanthorpe). We attribute our quality and success to our hands on contact with all facets of the production process, and of course our love of wine.

In 2006-08 Kominos won 4 trophies, 6 gold, 18 silver and 38 bronze medals in open National competition, with James Halliday picking Kominos Merlot, as their signature wine in his 2007 Wine Atlas of Australia.

 MASTER OF WINE

"....Master of Wine Bob Cambell said the Granite Belt was not well recognised as an Australian Wine Region but the success of Kominos Wines in winning six Medals had changed perceptions in the industry"

article....

Kominos: Queensland's Granite Belt is a unique elevated plateau (800m-100m above sea level) with cold winter temperatures down to -10 degrees C in 2006, and mean summer January temperatures averaging 20.1degrees C. This is a climatic temperature range very similar to Australia's best districts. The natural environment is ruggedly beautiful abounding in granite boulders. A host of mountainous ranges spring from the valley floor. Elevations of vineyards scattered around the district vary from 680 m at Ballandean to 850 m at our Balancing Boulder Vineyard, making it one of the highest commercial vineyards in Australia. This variation makes for considerable microclimatic variation between vineyard sites and differences in quality.

We are located amidst a fruit bowl of temperate fruit orchards and vegetable fields. Our grape vineyards are surrounded by other vineyards and orchards, growing an array of delicious apples, pears, apricots, plums, peaches, nectarines, raspberries and healthy vegetables- broccoli, cabbages, leeks, garlic in winter and tomatoes, capsicums, zucchini in summer. The Granite Belt is a veritable garden of Eden. There is no similar or better region in our tropical /subtropical state for visiting and experiencing an authentic production experience.

Tony and Mary Comino grow grapes on 30 acres of vineyards. Together they handcraft and sell their creations on site in their landmark Australiana cellar door. "Our customers love the immediate connection between the grapes we tend just metres away from the cellar door and what we offer for tasting" says Mary. "As makers who grow our own grapes, we are always able to take greater care with growing (sometimes a little obsessively) and take greater risks with ripening than many makers who purchase grapes in " comments Tony Comino.
